BIOGRAPHY

Cultural activist, Rodolphe “Nèg Mawon” Pierre, Jr. was born into Vodou in the Mornatif neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a historical center of Vodou culture in Haiti.  He grew up dancing and drumming as a way of life among Haiti’s most renowned folklore artists, such as master drummer Ti Toutou Rouge; exhibitionist of Haitian folklore, drummer and an Ougan Vodou priest, Janco; and singer Mambo Lucienne.  His first performances as an actor, dancer, and singer were in Wôl, an annual summer art event for children in Mornatif and other Port-au-Prince neighborhoods.  He lives and works between United States of America and Haiti. He has coordinated educational programs for the Mikerline Dance Company and the Harlem’s Children Zone. Nèg Mawon has used his Masters of Arts degree in Political Science, and Bachelor’s degree in Human Sciences to further efforts in public health awareness in underserved communities with the International Corporation for Development in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Nèg Mawon’s entire extended family of folkloric musicians and dancers was also part of Vodou culture as priests, priestesses, and initiated drummers. At 15 years of age Neg Mawon was ordained as a Vodou priest by Mémé Ougan (Antoine Exumé), the most prestigious priest in Haiti.  His mother, Jesula Barthelmy, was a Vodou priestess and one of Haiti’s most accomplished folklore singers and dancers who have performed with Haiti’s National Theater and most of Haitian folklore groups in Haiti and abroad.  His brother, Rony Pierre, performed with Tamboula d’Haiti Dance Company as a dancer between 1985-1987, under artistic director Herve Maxi.  His first exposure to drum rhythms outside Port-au-Prince was by Yatande Bòkò who taught him the rhythms of Lakou Souvenance, Soukri, and Badjo in Gonaïves. After arriving at New York in 1994, Neg Mawon have founded a 10-piece Rara band, Rasinn San Bout, which has been playing in Central Park every Sunday during the summer since its inception.  During carnival season in Haiti, Neg Mawon plays drums with Port-au-Prince-based band Relax, and during Easter with Rara band Titanic, of which he was president, 2000-2001.

Neg Mawon played drums throughout the United States and abroad with musicians and artists of different backgrounds and cultures, including Yatande Bòkò, Ayisan, Zilibo, Ti Myrtou, Jean Mary, “Fan Fan” Jean Guy, “Mazon Bél” Paul, Yvon, and Max. As a music producer, he has since released a number of acclaimed CD’s dedicated to the sacred and devotional music of Haiti. With every beat of the drum, Nèg Mawon instills in his listeners his deep love and passion for Haitian drum culture, and evokes the celebration of life and community which are the essence of Haitian culture.  His drumming carries the message of the original Nèg Mawon, the enslaved person who rose up, a Haitian symbol for personal and communal emancipation.
